Bedtime Routine by Age

A consistent bedtime routine is the single most powerful tool for better baby sleep. Here is exactly what to do at every age, step by step.

Why routines work

A bedtime routine works because the brain learns to associate a sequence of events with sleep. When you do the same things in the same order every night, the brain starts producing melatonin earlier in the sequence. By the time you put your baby in the crib, their body is already preparing for sleep.

Research shows that babies with consistent bedtime routines fall asleep faster, wake less often at night, and sleep longer overall. The routine does not have to be long. It has to be consistent.

Newborn (0 to 6 weeks)

Bedtime: Variable (no set bedtime yet)Routine: 10 to 20 min
1

Dim the lights

Reduce stimulation 20 minutes before sleep. Bright light suppresses melatonin even in newborns.

2

White noise on

Turn on white noise at around 65 dB (similar to a shower). This mimics the womb and is deeply calming.

3

Feed

A full feed before sleep. Do not worry about feeding to sleep at this stage. Survival mode is the goal.

4

Swaddle and settle

A firm swaddle with arms in. Rock, sway, or pat until drowsy. Place in the crib on their back.

At this stage, a bedtime routine is simply about reducing stimulation. There is no set bedtime yet. Follow your baby's sleepy cues.

6 Weeks to 3 Months

Bedtime: 8:00 to 10:00 PMRoutine: 15 to 20 min
1

Warm bath (optional)

A warm bath lowers core body temperature as it rises back up, triggering sleepiness. 3 to 4 times per week is enough.

2

White noise on

Start white noise before the feed so the association builds.

3

Feed in dim light

Keep the room dark and quiet during the feed. No talking, no eye contact if possible.

4

Swaddle and settle

Swaddle firmly. Rock or sway until drowsy but not fully asleep. Practice placing in the crib while still slightly awake.

A consistent routine at this age begins to signal to the brain that sleep is coming. The more consistent you are, the faster the association builds.

3 to 6 Months

Bedtime: 7:00 to 8:30 PMRoutine: 20 to 30 min
1

Bath

A warm bath is now a powerful sleep cue. Keep it calm and quiet.

2

Massage

A brief gentle massage with lotion reinforces the calm-down signal and supports nervous system regulation.

3

One short book

A simple, calm board book. Keep the lights dim. This is not stimulation time.

4

Feed

A full feed in the dark. If nursing, try to keep them slightly awake at the end.

5

Song and settle

One consistent lullaby, then into the crib drowsy but awake. Practice Le Pause if they stir.

This is the ideal window to begin gentle sleep shaping. A consistent 20 to 30 minute routine before every sleep (naps included) builds powerful sleep associations.

6 to 12 Months

Bedtime: 6:30 to 7:30 PMRoutine: 20 to 30 min
1

Bath

A warm bath every night. This is now a strong biological sleep cue.

2

Pajamas and sleep sack

The act of putting on pajamas and a sleep sack becomes a powerful transition signal.

3

2 to 3 books

Read in a dim room in a calm, quiet voice. Choose the same books repeatedly so they become part of the cue.

4

Feed (if still nursing)

Move the feed earlier in the routine so it is no longer the last thing before sleep.

5

Lullaby

The same song every night. This is the final cue before the crib.

6

Into the crib awake

Place in the crib drowsy but awake. Say the same phrase every night: 'I love you, sleep tight.' Then leave.

By 6 months, the bedtime routine is a powerful tool. Babies this age can learn to fall asleep independently with gentle, consistent support.

12 to 18 Months

Bedtime: 6:30 to 7:30 PMRoutine: 20 to 30 min
1

Bath

Keep it calm. No exciting toys in the bath at this age.

2

Pajamas and sleep sack

Let your toddler help choose their pajamas. Giving small choices reduces bedtime resistance.

3

2 to 3 books

Let them choose the books. This gives them agency and reduces power struggles.

4

Lullaby or quiet music

The same song or playlist every night.

5

Into the crib and goodnight

The same phrase every night. Consistency is the key at this age.

Toddlers thrive on predictability. The more consistent the routine, the less bedtime resistance you will see. Avoid screen time for at least 1 hour before bed.

18 Months to 3 Years

Bedtime: 7:00 to 8:00 PMRoutine: 25 to 35 min
1

Bath

Calm bath, no screens, no exciting play.

2

Pajamas

Let them choose. Small choices reduce power struggles significantly.

3

3 books (firm limit)

Set the limit before you start: 'We are reading 3 books tonight.' Hold the limit kindly but firmly.

4

Lullaby

The same song every night.

5

One check-in and goodnight

After lights out, offer one check-in ('I will come check on you in 5 minutes') then follow through. This reduces anxiety.

The 2-year regression is real. Toddlers will test every limit at bedtime. Gentle, consistent boundaries are the answer. Our Toddler Sleep Guide covers this in full.
